Research into SDGs
The United Nations introduced 17 goals in 2015 with the aim of making the world a better place. These goals, known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), were initiated to address various global challenges. The UN set a target to achieve all these goals by 2030. Since their inception, there have been more than 7800 actions completed worldwide to contribute to these objectives. Remarkably, each goal has seen over 1000 actions undertaken to make a positive impact and bring about positive change. The collective efforts towards these goals signify a global commitment to creating a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
The five key pillars for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely people, prosperity, planet, peace, and partnership. Unfortunately, the ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic have adversely affected the progress towards achieving these goals, particularly evident in the case of goal 2 – no hunger. In 2019, the UN High-level Political Forum expressed concerns as the SDGs were deemed "off-track." The UN's 2019 SDG Progress Report revealed that only one out of 38 assessed targets was on track globally, highlighting the need for concerted efforts to address and overcome the obstacles hindering sustainable development.
In my own opinion, achieving the goals by 2030 seems unlikely. As of 2023, many poorer countries still grapple with food shortages, and this challenge extends to various global issues, such as climate change. The primary obstacle hindering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the insufficient tracking of data. Many countries do not record the necessary information, making it difficult to measure progress towards these goals. This lack of data poses a significant barrier to effectively addressing and achieving the SDGs.
